As our province transitions to renewable and natural gas-generated electricity, communities that have long relied on coal to drive the economy are left asking, what’s next?  Nineteen Alberta municipalities are facing uncertainty, and many are now looking to the province for solutions.  The Notley government has set aside millions of dollars to support workers and municipalities impacted by the phase-out of coal-generated power.  Nearly $5 million will be rolled out to support projects and create jobs, through the Coal Communities Transition Fund.  Deron Bilous, Alberta’s Minister of Economic Development, says the government has the backs of coal workers and coal communities.  But Parkland County in particular wants the province to recognize the tax revenue being lost and do more support future development.
