Archivists at the University of Calgary are working to catalogue and preserve the records of EMI Music Canada. The collection includes multiple versions of songs recorded in the EMI and Capital music studios, as well as packaging and marketing materials for some of Canada’s favourite artists.  You can see the efforts that launched the careers of Tom Cochrane, Anne Murray, Glass Tiger and other Canadian music greats—as well as the effort it takes to archive such a collection. The material spans 1949 to 2012 and exists in every audio-visual format created during that time period. This means that, since starting, the U of C team has been on a quest for the right equipment to play original materials, some of which haven’t been seen or heard since their making in the studio.
