The Edmonton Police Service’s Critical Incident Re-Integration program was the first in Canada, a program to guide and support officers who have been involved in a shooting or traumatic event.

Since 2009, the program has helped more than 80 officers transition back into their policing careers. It began as a short-term program but has evolved in recent years to include a long-term approach, sparked by a member who had been through the original program but needed more help. The focus is always on the people involved, providing them with what they need and applying the lessons learned to the officers that follow.

Now, the lessons learned in Edmonton are being shared across the country, showing other first responder teams that there is a way to help their members get back to the career they are so passionate about.
