The Action Surface Rights Association will appear before the Supreme Court of Canada in opposition to a legal decision that allows bankrupt energy companies to avoid cleaning up abandoned oil wells.

The so-called Redwater decision was made in an Alberta court in 2016. It ruled bankrupt energy companies should pay creditors first rather than clean up the sites, allowing companies to walk away from oil wells that are unproductive.

Landowners say the ruling leaves them holding the bag and has them wondering why banks are making a profit over industry polluting.
