Residents in rural areas of Alberta say property theft and breaking and entering are the most common criminal activities and it's just getting worse.

The need to work together is being addressed by Alberta RCMP with a new partnership with Alberta Rural Crime Watch organizations.

The newly signed Memorandum of Understanding defines the roles of those organizations and that of the RCMP. The goal is to get more information to law enforcement in remote areas, to allow them to more easily track crime trends and identify hot spots.

RCMP Deputy Commissioner Todd Shean, commanding officer of the Alberta RCMP says, "No one can help us better understand criminal activity in rural communities than the people living in them. They know their community more than anyone and deeply care about their safety and that of their neighbors. Which is why, with great pleasure we announce that we are renewing our partnership with the Alberta Provincial Rural Crime Watch Association to continue to work together towards building safe, secure and resilient rural communities throughout the province."
