The Alberta government is considering potential coverage of generic Truvada for pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP to reduce the risks of catching HIV infection.

Truvada was approved by Health Canada in 2016. It’s been available ever since, but unfortunately inaccessible to many Albertans due to its expensive price. Truvada could cost up to $900/month, while generic versions of Truvada are costing around $500 if insurance doesn’t cover the cost.

Truvada is currently covered in Alberta for HIV-1 treatment but advocates are asking the government to fund Truvada’s use as a daily HIV prevention pill. It’s

been said to be 99% effective in preventing an individual from catching the infection if taken daily.
