The work of a composite sketch artist can play a vital role in a police investigation; helping to solve serious crimes like homicides and sexual assaults.

Victims and witnesses of a crime can struggle to remember details, but a composite sketch artist can walk them through several steps to help them recognize features and characteristics, and work together to create a drawing. When the witness is satisfied with the image, it is shared with the investigators.

Detective Ken Bruns has always enjoyed art as a hobby, and at the suggestion of one of his first sergeants, he started exploring composite sketching soon after joining the Edmonton Police Service.

He sees it as a valuable tool in helping solve crimes and is happy to contribute in this way. According to Ken, once the perpetrator is finally caught he often compares his drawing with the composite drawing he's created to see how close he got.
