18% of women seeking support from Alberta shelters were turned away last year. That means over 22,000 women were turned away from women’s shelters across Alberta last due to over-capacity.

According to the Alberta Council of Women's Shelters, an announcement of $15M annually in new funding shows a real commitment from the province to help show the public that shelters are more than just beds.

The funding is earmarked to keep shelter doors open across the province, fund second-stage shelters and expand outreach services. Still, is more support needed?
