Our Primetime This Week Panel digs deep into the cross-border Alberta/B.C. trade spat, a ban on spear hunting, backlash for Trudeau's bad joke and romance rankings in Alberta.

A battle over bitumen and booze wages on between Alberta and B.C.

Alberta banned B.C. wine after British Columbia’s proposal to cap the amount of oil coming into that province. Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says it is a threat to the already approved Trans Mountain Pipeline.

Some say the wine ban is a sending a message but others say it will hurt Alberta businesses, and is hurting B.C. businesses that have nothing to do with this bitumen battle. Others wonder when and how the federal government will step in.

Online video spurs Alberta to ban spear hunting

The Alberta Government updated its hunting regulations this week. It included banning hunting with a spear.

The decision came after a video of American Josh Bowmar hunting a black bear with a spear went viral. Alberta’s new hunting regulations are meant to ensure big game animals do not suffer unnecessarily and hopefully discourage reckless hunting.

Retailers that sell hunting weapons do not see the need for the regulation, saying there is not much of a demand for spear hunting weapons anyway.

The Prime Minister's bad joke just in Edmonton just keeps on going, and going and...

A comment Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called a ‘dumb joke’ is going viral. During a town hall visit to Edmonton on February 1st, Trudeau interrupted a woman who spoke of ‘mankind’.“We like to say ‘peoplekind’, not necessarily ‘mankind’,” he said. “We like to be more inclusive.”

The comment earned some praise from people who say he’s championing feminism, others accused him of ‘mansplaining’ and being condescending.

Trudeau says it’s a humbling reminder to not make jokes even when he thinks they’re funny.
