The use of social media keeps us connected, but it can also be negative or dangerous for people, particularly children. For example, cyberbullying -- when someone sends intimidating, threatening or unpleasant messages electronically – can have a huge impact on a young person’s mental health. Jo Phillips and Joe Whitbread of Jo(e) Social Media, based in Lacombe, work with children and youth regularly and say that parents play a huge role in helping their children become good digital citizens. But to do that, parents need to recognize that they use social media differently, and that in order to be a resource for their kids, they need to ask more questions and focus on listening.
